For Liverpool-New York service 13/7/1881 launching ceremony held but ship stuck halfway down the ways. 4/1882 won the Blue Riband, and subsequently beat own record three times; in 1883 was first to exceed 17kn average speed. 1884 Guion Line was in financial difficulties and vessel taken over by Richard, and then William, Pearce - the owners of Elders shipyard 1888 6932grt 3554nrt; 1897 7152grt 3752nrt 1893 laid up in the Gareloch 1896 after a trooping charter for Compania Trasatlantica, Spain, laid up again 1900 shipyard workers' hostel at Barrow. |
