She and Fervent first had locomotive boilers with one funnel as the Admiralty would not accept boilers from HD&W, as proposed. They could not reach their contracted speed, so the Admiralty agreed to change them to Reed Boilers with four funnels. These also produced problems with extra weight, they never reached their design speed and were not a success
