27/02/1871 "The ship CANDIDATE reported arrived San Francisco from Peru" (NY Times 01/Mar/71). By 1874 described in White Wings Vol 2 as a barque of 765 tons, making fast passage from London to Otago with passengers. Seen as a barque in a painting of 1883 date.
