After suffering engine trouble on 28/11/1870 in heavy weather, UNION was stranded on Rattray Briggs, about 1nm off Rattray Head (Bremen for New York with 310 passengers and general cargo). All passengers, crew of 112 and mails landed by boats, and taken to Peterhead. Some cargo salved. Ship broke up by 11/12/1870.
Passengers picked up from Peterhead by HANSA (Caird Yd 92) for New York.
